A little bit about Chef…

In 1995, at the age of 22, Bill Klein was the Executive Chef of The Riverhouse in Grassy Creek, NC. Recognizing his culinary talent, early mentor and benefactor Steve Plummer sent him to the New England Culinary Institute to get formal training. Upon graduating in 1998, Bill went to France as a Stagiere for Grand Hôtel du Lion d’Or, Commis Stagiare for Les Jardin de Sens, and Cuisinier Stagiare  for Restaurant Buerehiesel, all two and three Michelin star rated restuarants. Upon returning to the US in 1999, Bill was recruited to be part of the opening team that won the 1999 James Beard Award for “Best New Restaurant in the U.S.” and also five Mobil stars, Relais et Châteaux and Relais Gourmands designations for Gary Danko in San Francisco. Then in 2001 Bill Klein was one of six cooks hand-picked by Ron Siegel (French Laundry, Charles Nob Hill) to save Masa, one of San Francisco’s landmark restaurants, fallen on hard times. Within three months under this new team, Masa was again rated among top three restaurants in the city! In 2002, Chef Klein came back to his roots  in North Carolina and once again took the Executive Chef position at the The Riverhouse before coming to Asheville. In 2005, Chef Bill Klein knocked on the door of Treavis and Traci Taylor just days before they were to open Fig bistro in the Biltmore Village and prepared a meal that marked the beginning of  his 6 year run as the Executive Chef there. After many years of success, some differing philosophies, and a lot of sarcasm and shenanigans, the owners of Fig and Chef parted ways opening up the Biltmore Estate gates for him to become the Executive Chef for the Bistro. In spite of culinary hype and “foodie” trends, Chef Bill Klein remains true to the classics of his French training and will most certainly please the palate and maybe the cerebral cortex if you’re willing.

Celebrate your Queen at Jack of Hearts

Come on down this Saturday, October 6th, and hoist some steins in honor of this classic German celebration. Merry maids will be serving up classic German pub fare and the brew-ha-ha will feature sensational ales specially ordered for Oktoberfest. The party continues with the classic, and most talented Ruby Mayfield. Ruby has music in her blood and it flows soulfully through her Sax-driven Jazz and Blues tunes. The show starts at 9 p.m. and the best thing—it’s free so you can buy more beer!

We enjoyed talking with the artists and welcoming festival-goers with great handcrafted food and cold micro brews.

As the mid-week approaches we are getting ready for some really great shows. We’ve got gypsy jazz on Sunday, September 16 with Hot Point Trio. Next Friday, September 21 get ready for The Mug based out of Black Mountain. The Mug plays an energetic mix of original and classic blues, funk and rock tunes guaranteed to get the crowd on their feet and yelling for more.

Saturday come see The Great Smoky Mountain Blue Grass Band at 9 p.m. for a little education and entertainment. Their music is grounded in the great traditions of bluegrass, featuring tunes by Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, as well as performing their own traditional-based tunes and Gospel quartets. They are experts on the history of the music, and they like to fill-in audiences on the stories and histories behind the tunes and styles they play. So take notes! All shows are free, Friday and Saturday shows are at 9 p.m. and Sunday shows are during our regular brunch hours starting at 10:30 a.m.

FREE for the community, the egg hunt will be ongoing from 10am-2:00pm; children ages 2-10 are invited to participate with their parents or an older sibling to assist. Free baskets will be provided at the entrance behind the Weaverville Town Hall.

Sack Races will take place in the nature park at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. All ages are invited to participate. Everyone is invited to get their picture taken with our very own Easter Bunny—Jack Rabbit, who will be ‘hopping’ around the restaurant and nature park.

Jack of Hearts will serve a special Easter brunch starting at 10am and will have fun activities throughout the day including a Paper Egg Drawing contest, face painting and bean-bag toss. Kids ages 2-15 are invited to come to Jack of Hearts between now and Easter to draw their paper egg early to take part in the contest. Winners from age groups 2-4, 5-7, 8-11 and 12-15 will be announced at 4pm on April 8th and will receive prizes and ribbons.

The Chuck Beattie Blues Band will have a free show from noon to 4pm. Chuck, (aka Dr. Blues) belts out authentic renditions of classic blues. He draws from a background in gospel, jazz and the sounds of the Delta to bring out the best of Chicago Style Blues with old school charm.

Jack of Hearts is honored to be a part of the Weaverville community and looks forward to sharing a fun day with you this Easter.
